On the left is the Lantau North Obelisk. On the right is the Lantau South Obelisk. They were erected by the British Navy in 1902. On the bases of the obelisks, it is clearly marked that the “Convention Respecting an Extension of the Hong Kong Territory” was signed between the British Government and the Qing Government in 1898, under which the New Territories including Lantau would be leased to the Great Britain.
