Secretary for Development speaks on Urban Renewal Strategy review

Following is the transcript of the Secretary for Development, Mrs Carrie Lam, speaking to the media after attending a radio program on Urban Renewal Strategy review today (February 6):

Reporter: ......What kind of public engagement your bureau is planning to do apart from this sponsored programme?

Secretary for Development: This sponsored program is actually one of these measures to engage the public. This review of Urban Renewal Strategy has started since July 2008. In the last 18 months we have actually adopted a large number of means to engage the public, like the public forums, focus groups, roving exhibitions, opinion surveys, web-based discussions and so on. So we feel that we have tried most of the means to engage the public but somehow up to now, it doesn't seem to be a very heated, a very topical discussion in society. That's why on the advice of some of my members in the Steering Committee, I decided that perhaps if I could come to talk directly to members of the public through this radio program, we will be able to get more views to help our further stage of work. If there are any suggestions on how we can do better in terms of public engagement, I am very happy to try.
