Opening of Water Resources Education Centre (with photos)

The Water Resources Education Centre of the Water Supplies Department (WSD) was opened today (March 4). The centre aims to enhance the knowledge of water conservation among the younger generation and cultivate water-saving habits from childhood.

The centre comprises seven theme zones, with sections on the history of water supply in Hong Kong, water management measures, impounding reservoirs, and precious Dongjiang water, as well as a Water Cycle Classroom, a "Water: Learn & Conserve" Resource Hall and a Water-saving Device Showroom.

The Secretary for Development, Mr Paul Chan, said at the opening ceremony today that the Government endeavours to deliver the message, "Cherish Water Resources, Save Water", to the public via different channels. He called on the public to support the WSD's promotion programmes and to develop a culture of water conservation together.

The WSD completed the Domestic Water Consumption Survey last year and formulated the following four core water conservation measures after analysing the public's consumption patterns:

1. Water Resources Education Centre:
To set up a temporary Water Resources Education Centre at the WSD Mong Kok Office for enhancing youngsters' knowledge of the importance of protecting water resources and water conservation.

2. "Let's Save 10L Water" Campaign:
To launch a "Let's Save 10L Water" Campaign on World Water Day on March 22. One thousand primary school students and their family members will be invited to take part in the Campaign's pilot scheme for six months. The campaign will be extended to the community with a target of saving at least 10 litres of fresh water per capita per day.

3. "Save Water, Cherish the World" roving exhibition:
To reach out to the community and strengthen public awareness of water conservation through roving exhibitions at shopping malls and housing estates.

4. Preparation of water saving tips:
To produce water saving tips and a promotional leaflet in Chinese, English, Indonesian, Tagalog and Thai for distribution to domestic helpers via employment agencies. These materials will also be available at the Immigration Department office in Wan Chai.

The Director of Water Supplies, Mr Ma Lee-tak, said at the ceremony that the Water Resources Education Centre provides an overview of the water resources and conservation efforts in Hong Kong via exhibits, live demonstrations and interactive games.

Also attending the ceremony today were the Permanent Secretary for Development (Works), Mr Wai Chi-sing; Legislative Council member Dr Lo Wai-kwok; the Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Water Resources and Quality of Water Supplies (ACRQWS), Dr Chan Hon-fai; and the Chairperson of the ACRQWS Working Group on Public Education, Ms Nicole Wong.

Schools are welcome to visit the centre by appointment. Please visit the WSD website for details (www.wsd.gov.hk/en/education/water_resources_education_centre).
