The Development Bureau and the Ministry of Commerce today (June 29) signed the Mainland and Hong Kong Trade Co-operation Mechanism for Natural Sand 2012 to ensure a sufficient and stable supply of natural sand from the Mainland to Hong Kong to cater for the needs of the local construction industry.

Witnessed by the Financial Secretary, Mr John C Tsang; the Secretary for Development, Mrs Carrie Lam; and the Vice Minister of Commerce, Mr Jiang Yaoping, the Mainland and Hong Kong Trade Co-operation Mechanism for Natural Sand 2012 was signed by the Deputy Secretary for Development (Works), Mr Enoch Lam, and the Deputy Director-General of the Department of Foreign Trade of the Ministry of Commerce, Ms Jiang Fan, at Central Government Offices, Tamar.

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government and the Ministry of Commerce signed the existing co-operation mechanism under the Mainland and Hong Kong Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement in 2007 in an effort to safeguard an orderly supply of natural sand from the Mainland to Hong Kong. The agreement signed by the Development Bureau and the Ministry of Commerce today further strengthens the arrangement for the supply of natural sand for Hong Kong's major construction projects and meets the needs for the sustained development of Hong Kong.

The Civil Engineering and Development Department has updated the relevant information and application forms in accordance with the new Co-operation Mechanism. Details are available on the website of the Civil Engineering and Development Department (www.cedd.gov.hk).
