SDEV pays visit to Singapore's Green Building Council and Strata Titles Boards (with photos)

The Secretary for Development, Mrs Carrie Lam, met officials of the Singapore Green Building Council (SGBC) and Strata Titles Boards in Singapore today (June 29) to learn about these institutions' latest efforts in promoting green buildings and tackling building disputes in multi-storey buildings.

The SGBC was set up in October 2009 to propel the Singapore building and construction industry towards environmental sustainability by promoting green building design, practices, technologies and products. In November 2009, Hong Kong also saw the establishment of the Hong Kong Green Building Council (HKGBC).

Mrs Lam took the opportunity to brief the SGBC officials on the work of HKGBC, particularly its recently upgraded BEAM Plus assessment method.  She also invited SGBC to join the HKGBC Conference to be held in November this year.

The Strata Titles Board (STB) is a body constituted under law to adjudicate disputes relating to strata units or strata development including common property and applications by the majority owners for an en-bloc sale order to sell whole development.  Mrs Lam learned that majority of disputes relating to building management handled by STB involve water leakage from one unit into another.

Mrs Lam is visiting Singapore at the invitation of the Singapore Government to attend the Asia-Pacific Water Ministers' Forum and the World Cities Summit 2010 from June 28 to 30.

She met the Chief Executive Officer of the Urban Redevelopment Authority, Mrs Cheong Kook-hean, and called on the Chinese Ambassador to Singapore, Mr Wei Wei, on the first day of her visit.

She also attended the Ministerial Roundtable of the Forum and briefed other ministers from Asia-Pacific countries on the water supply situation in Hong Kong and the adoption of the Total Water Management Strategy to manage Hong Kong's valuable water resources.

Mrs Lam will speak at the Summit's Ministerial Dialogue and a plenary session tomorrow (June 30) to brief participants on Hong Kong's latest efforts in striving for a quality city environment.
