The Secretary for Development, Mr Eric Ma, visited elderly households and families in need in Kwai Tsing District under the "Celebrations for All" project today (May 22).

Mr Ma said at the launch ceremony, "The launch ceremony for the 'Celebrations for All' project of Kwai Tsing District marks the beginning of the work of various sectors in Kwai Tsing District to share love and happiness with the people in need in the district.

"Starting from today, some 30 social welfare and local organisations in the district will mobilise hundreds of volunteers to visit more than 23,000 households of elderly people and families in need. The meaning of this event is not just about one or 10,000 gift packs, but more importantly, volunteers can take this opportunity to further understand the needs of each family for follow-up assistance."

Mr Ma said that the home visits allowed him and the volunteers to interact with the community and understand how to make Kwai Tsing a more liveable district.

Accompanied by the District Officer (Kwai Tsing), Mr Alan Lo, and the Chairman of the Kwai Tsing District Council, Mr Law King-shing, as well as volunteers, Mr Ma visited six elderly and grass-roots families in Lai King Estate and took opportunity to learn more about their living conditions and needs. He also distributed gift packs to them to share the joy of the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

Other officials participating in home visits were the Permanent Secretary for Development (Works), Mr Hon Chi-keung; the Director of Lands, Ms Bernadette Linn; the Director of Water Supplies, Mr Enoch Lam; the Director of Buildings, Mr Cheung Tin-cheung; the Director of Drainage Services, Mr Edwin Tong; the Director of Electrical and Mechanical Services, Mr Frank Chan; the Acting Director of Architectural Services, Mrs Sylvia Lam; the Acting Deputy Director of Civil Engineering and Development, Mr Robert Chan; and the Land Registrar, Ms Doris Cheung.
