Guided tour explores centenary waterworks monuments (with photo)

The Commissioner for Heritage's Office has organised Tai Tam Waterworks Heritage Trail guided tours to promote among young people appreciation of these beautiful monuments and the history of Hong Kong's water supply. Tai Tam Tuk Raw Water Pumping Station and its Chimney Shaft, usually not accessible to the public, will open to guided tour participants.

The guided tours will be held at Tai Tam Waterworks Heritage Trail every Saturday morning between October 10 and December 19, with the first tour at 10.30am and the second at 11.30am. The 5km tour will start at Tai Tam Reservoir Road (near Parkview) and finish at Tai Tam Tuk Raw Water Pumping Station, lasting for about three hours.

The Tai Tam Waterworks Heritage Trail features 21 historic waterworks structures which have been declared monuments. The oldest structures are the Tai Tam Upper Reservoir Masonry Bridge, Masonry Aqueduct, Dam, Valve House and Tunnel Inlet built in 1883 - 1888. The "youngest" monument is the Tai Tam Tuk Raw Water Pumping Station which was constructed in 1907.

Nowadays most of these historic facilities are intact and still in operation.

A total of 10 information stations have been set up en route to introduce the function and historic value of these monuments. An information pamphlet on the Tai Tam Waterworks Heritage Trail is available on http://www.wsd.gov.hk/.

The guided tours are free of charge. Youths aged 12 to 18 are welcome to sign up for the guided tours through schools or non-profit making organisations. Application forms are available on http://www.heritage.gov.hk/. For enquiries, please call 2805 7146 or 6222 0229.
