Electrical and Mechanical Services Department promotes safety and energy efficiency

It was vital to integrate socio-economic development with electrical and mechanical (E&M) safety and energy efficiency, and maintain a high level of awareness of E&M and gas safety as well as energy efficiency in the community, the Director of Electrical and Mechanical Services, Mr Ho Kwong-wai said today (October 6).

"Only when there is a balance among safety, energy efficiency and economic development can Hong Kong be recognised as a world-class metropolis," Mr Ho said.

Mr Ho was speaking at the opening ceremony of the "E&M Safety Carnival 2007" in Victoria Park, Causeway Bay. Also officiating was the Permanent Secretary for the Environment/Director of Environmental Protection Department, Ms Anissa Wong.

Mr Ho pointed out that the Government had been actively promoting E&M and gas safety as well as energy efficiency in the community.  Strong support was received from various sectors and community groups, demonstrating a high spirit of collaboration.

The E&M Safety Carnival is a highlight event of the E&M Safety Campaign, attracting thousands of participants.  The safety campaign, organised by the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department for the seventh consecutive year, has become one of the largest public education activities in Hong Kong.

The campaign aims to enhance the community's awareness of safety and good practices in the use of electrical appliances and installations, gas appliances, lifts and escalators, amusement rides, as well as promoting energy efficiency.  A total of 15 key organisations from various sectors have collaborated in this year's campaign.

Mr Ho said these organisations had taken up the task to educate the community about E&M safety in the course of their daily operations, setting examples as good enterprises.

Electrical and Mechanical Services Department is the regulatory department which enforces various electrical and mechanical and gas safety laws and regulations in Hong Kong.  It also promotes energy efficiency and the wider use of renewable energy.  Public education is an important aspect of its work and the department has been actively reaching out to the community via mass media, publicity channels and visits to schools and elderly homes.
