Third annual Electrical & Mechanical Safety Campaign is under way

For the third consecutive year, the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) has joined with key industry players to organise the E&M Safety Campaign, one of the biggest public education campaigns in Hong Kong.

The campaign aims to heighten public awareness of electrical, gas, lift and escalator safety and energy efficiency. It is a joint effort of the EMSD and 17 leading organisations and trade associations from various sectors, including power, gas and oil, public transport, housing and estate management.

A carnival to promote the campaign took place today (November 2) at the Piazza, Kowloon Park, Tsimshatsui. Officiatings was the Permanent Secretary for Economic Development and Labour (Economic Development), Ms Sandra Lee.

The theme for this year's campaign is "E&M safety and energy efficiency begin with small things".

The Director of Electrical and Mechanical Services, Mr Roger S H Lai, elaborated on the theme.

"The word small has a double meaning here," he said.  "First, it refers to small things in our daily life.  E&M safety and energy efficiency do not call for revolutionary changes.  Instead we encourage people to do whatever small things they can to practise safety and energy efficiency in their daily routines.

"Second, small refers to children and the younger generation.  We believe children should be taught these things from an early age.  We have a series of programmes catering for children to help them understand the concepts and good practices of E&M safety and energy efficiency."

The 18 organisations collaborating on this year's E&M Safety Campaign are :
