Public views on potential applications of renewable energy in HK being sought

Public views on the potential applications of renewable energy are now being sought and all written submissions are welcome to send to the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) on or before April 6, 2003.

The EMSD commissioned a two-stage consultancy study on the Potential Applications of Renewable Energy in November 2000 to investigate the feasibility of wider application of new and renewable energy technologies in Hong Kong.

The Stage 1 Study was completed and the Executive Summary of the Study had been uploaded on the "What's new" section of the department's website http://www.emsd.gov.hk/ to seek feedbacks on the findings and recommendations.

Stage 1 Study mainly evaluates the potential of various forms of new and renewable energy technologies for wide-scale local use. The key findings and recommendations of the Study include:

* renewable energy sources that are considered potentially feasible for wide-scale application in Hong Kong;

* major hindrances for wide-scale development of renewable energy ;

* measures for setting up a positive market environment for wide-scale application of renewable energy; and

* the targets of contribution from renewable energy produced locally to annual electricity demand.

Stage 2 Study is a design-and-build project involving the recently-completed installation of different types of building-integrated photovoltaic panels in Wanchai Tower. The objective is to assess their performance under local weather conditions until early 2004.

All written submissions on Stage 1 Study are invited by mail to the Energy Efficiency Office, Electrical and Mechanical Services Department, 11/F., 111 Leighton Road, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong; by fax to (852) 2890 6081 or by email to renergy@emsd.gov.hk.
