Road T3 construction contract awarded

The Territory Development Department today (April 16) awarded a $1.483 billion contract for the construction of Road T3 and associated roadworks.

Road T3 serves as the Sha Tin approach to the future Cheung Sha Wan-to-Sha Tin section of Route 9. It will also connect the Sha Tin section of Tai Po Road with its Sha Tin Heights section. The road will help relieve traffic congestion in these two sections of Tai Po Road and the Tai Wai area.

It also covers the demolition of two bridges on Tai Po Road, crossing the KCR East Rail track and Mei Tin Road, and their replacement with wider bridges.

Extensive noise mitigation works will be udertaken, including a full enclosure approximately 215 metres long, a 1,000m-long semi-enclosure and 5,200m-long cantilever and vertical noise barriers ranging from 2 to 5.8m high.

A stringent environmental monitoring and audit programme will be introduced to control the environmental impact of the construction works.

The contract was signed today between the Director of Territory Development, Mr. Wong Hung-kin, and representatives of the contractor, Maeda-Barbican-Hsin Chong Joint Venture.

Completion is scheduled for early 2007.
