Under the Lion Rock

Over the past few months or so, Hong Kong has experienced a protracted “occupation movement” in which many young people participated and expressed their ardent social and political aspirations. It is saddening to know that some families and friends have seen their relationships become strained during the course of this movement because of disagreements on related issues, and this has caused a considerable impact on our social and familial harmony. It is my hope that after this expression of passion we can all calm down, find forgiveness and tolerance of different views, and reconcile our relationships with family members and friends.

It has been said recently that we have a new “Lion Rock spirit” in Hong Kong which emphasises the pursuit of social justice, with our young people being the most passionate in this regard. We should treasure and respect this spirit. Nonetheless, I also hope that we don’t forget the original “Lion Rock spirit”, which highlights the virtues of helping and caring for one another, shelving differences and joining hands to overcome hardships. As we embrace a new year, let us settle our disagreements and realise our dreams together.
